27th – 30th June 2022, daily 10:00-12:30 BST Responsible Animal Research: Critical, Challenging & Creative Thinking Course.

This interactive guide to Responsible Animal Research with course tutor Dr Nikki Osborne is perfect for anyone starting to conduct or oversee research using animals or animal derived materials. Join Nikki to learn how to:

  • communicate research in an open and transparent manner, with an informed understanding of the range of societal opinions that exist on this issue.
  • recognise what implementation of the 3Rs and best practice means in the context of individual research projects, and why it is important for the rigour and reproducibility of research.
  • take ownership of your research conduct and the contribution you make to your local research culture.
  • demonstrate awareness of what research integrity means in the context of animal research.
  • confidently design and plan research involving the use of animals using a range of tools and resources that have been developed to support researchers to improve research practices.
  • understand the importance of good animal welfare, consider what factors can impact on the lifetime experience of laboratory animals, and reflect on how to enhance efforts to implement the 3Rs.

Participants completing the course will be awarded LASA CPD points. For more information visit the COURSE WEB PAGE, or to register by Friday 24th June 2022, CLICK HERE.

7th September, 10:00-11:00 BST FREE Responsible Research Webinar – “Developing a standardised approach to the ethical review of animal materials”.

Join Catherine McCarthy (Compliance Manager at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute) and Dr Nikki Osborne for this session aimed at individuals ethically reviewing or approving the purchase of animal or animal derived materials. Catherine will offer an update on the Animal Materials Working Group project to develop a standardised best practice approach.

13th-15th September, 09:30-13:00 BST daily PREPARE for Better Science Course.

This course is a collaborative effort with NORECOPA and will be jointly delivered by course tutors Prof Adrian Smith & Dr Nikki Osborne. The content is designed to support laboratory animal researchers, managers & research technicians to enhance the rigour and reproducibility of their studies by putting the PREPARE guidelines into practice when planning research and experimental procedures on animals. Join us and learn how to:

  • deliver better science using the PREPARE guidelines, checklist and website….
  • identify what can be done differently and understand how to implement change….
  • reflect upon the benefits for science and animal welfare…..
  • advise others on how to plan animal studies in accordance with PREPARE.

Participants completing the course will be awarded LASA CPD points. For more information visit the COURSE WEB PAGE, or to register CLICK HERE.

19th-21st September, daily 9:30-12:30 BST Statistical Analysis for In Vivo and In Vitro Scientists Course.

This course is tutored by biostatistician Katrina Gore and designed to support life science researchers to select the most appropriate method of statistical analysis for their experimental design. The course also includes how to report results in a rigorous and reproducible way. Join Katrina and learn how to:

  • identify sources of variation, and understand how to minimise the impact it can have.
  • understand how a scientific question maps to statistical questions and combines with the experimental design to influence the choice of statistical analysis methods.
  • visualise their data and make the most appropriate choice of plot to explore their data.
  • interpret summaries for location and dispersion, and what features of data influence the choice of appropriate summary statistics.
  • discuss data transformation methods, why they may be necessary, and which are the most useful.
  • identify and deal with outliers, plus use measures of precision.
  • compare two groups of data and assess significance using a t-test, plus understand p-values.
  • identify and interpret ANOVA, ANCOVA and other statistical tests including non-parametric tests and other simple statistical tests for more complex data types.
  • link the results of statistical analysis to the study purpose when reporting their research and use confidence intervals to better inform decision making.
