Modern trends, designs and developments
June 2005
A collection of presentations featuring new and future developments covering a wide spectrum of research
Presentations included the following topics:
- The design and function of a bespoke computer system.
- A major supplier response to the growth in the demand for aquatic systems and the challenge involved in the design and manufacture of a functional and cost-effective complete system.
- Modern technologies for the metabolic phenotyping of mice.
- The destruction of parasite eggs including pinworm by vapourised hydrogen peroxide (VHP).
- An update and discussion of the products currently available for telemetric monitoring of laboratory animals.
- Latest in-vivo imaging technology development for use with laboratory animals.
- Sound Matters: a review and answers to problems encountered in achieving a noise reduction within a laminar air-flow cabin to comply with Home Office requirements.
Use of Behavioural and hormonal parameters in welfare assessment
June 2005
Welfare assessment of laboratory animals is an ethical and legal requirement under A(SP)A that is fulfilled on a routine basis by animal technicians, investigators and veterinarians. Measuring welfare benefit and disbenefit is also an integral part of refinement studies. The meeting will provide training and a forum of discussion on the current methods of observing and analysing behaviour, and on the relevance of hormonal parameters in assessing distress in various laboratory animal species.
Technology Unravelled
Took place in May 2004 and was well-attended. Presentations focussed on topics which create confusion or uncertainty within the field of animal technology; sound, water, microbiology, circadian rhythmns, laminar flow cabinets, building design.
A one-day meeting was held in July 2004
The topic for discussion was: ' Anaesthesia refinements in Laboratory animals: Life after Sagatal
and Hypnorm'
Sagatal (pentobarbitone) and Hypnorm (fentanyl/fluanison)
have been widely used in laboratory animal species and a wide
range
of research models have long been established through their
use. Since the removal of Sagatal and Hypnorm from the UK
market, scientists have been faced with the task of changing
anaesthetic
protocols and validating them. This one day meeting will
provide a forum of discussion on the use of Sagatal and Hypnorm
in
laboratory animal science and their potential replacement
with alternative anaesthetic protocols. It will also address
the
pressing issue of continuing with existing protocols until
new ones are validated.
Meetings take place each year usually in the early summer, details of the next planned meeting will be posted as soon as they become available.
