The Care and Welfare Section covers all aspects of the health of laboratory animals; infectious diseases and their control; animal nutrition; housing, maintenance and husbandry within scientific establishments; with overall interest in the well-being of the animals.

Past Meetings
21 April, 2010: LASA Care and Welfare Section and LAVA joined forces to organise 'Cut to the Chase', a meeting on aspetic and atraumatic techniques in laboratory animal surgery. Over 120 delegates attended this meeting and the presentations held were:
- Launch of the guiding principles for preparing for and undertaking aseptic surgery
- Risk factors involved in laboratory animal surgery
- Pathophysiology of surgical infections
- Clinical audit - does it have any application in the lab animal field?
- Non surgical embryo transfer in rodents
- Laparoscopy in rodents
- Long-term vascular access in experimental models
- Training, acquisition and retention of surgical skills. A round table discussion

9 September 2009: The Animal Science Section and Care and Welfare Section joined forces to arrange a one-day meeting 'What really bugs you?' A series of presentations on current topics in health monitoring included:
- Modern methods of health screening in rodent colonies
- Methods of screening in different cage systems
- What should we be screening for?
- Screening in aquatic species
- Are my animals too clean? - models that require a ‘dirty’ mouse
- Novel methods of blood sampling
- Experiences of re-deriving into a new facility - a major clean up
