Care and Welfare Section one day Scientific Meeting
"Strictly Come Dieting - Laboratory Animal Nutrition in 2012"

25th April, 2012

The LASA Care and Welfare Section are pleased to announce a one day meeting to be held on Wednesday 25th April, 2012 focussing on the importance of Laboratory Animal Nutrition. This meeting is designed to help and educate LASA members, investigators, administrators, veterinarians, and animal care staff improve their knowledge of laboratory animal nutrition. The meeting will provide an overview of the major nutrients required for proper laboratory rodent nutrition, discuss the dietary requirements for common laboratory animal species, explain how dietary manipulations can be used in a research protocol and provide information on diet formulation. Topics for discussion will also include factors influencing the choice of diet and feeding practices; effects of specific treatments on nutritional content e.g. sterilization and the particular dietary needs of breeding or growing animals.

Dietary choices can increase or decrease the likelihood of developing certain diseases. Diets can also change metabolism and levels of circulating factors (hormones, lipids, etc.) which may be markers for disease risk. What is often over- looked is the fact that these concepts also apply to laboratory animals, making diet a critical part of study design.

Expert speakers from the field of laboratory animal nutrition will be present throughout the day to provide up to date information on developments within this field. The event is kindly sponsored by Special Diet Services, International Product Supplies, PMI Nutrition International and Harlan UK.

The location of the meeting venue is Staffordshire with easy links to both road and rail.

There is the option for an additional tour of a Victorian museum and brewery at the end of the day, following the presentations. An ideal opportunity for delegates to continue discussion of work related matters within a welcoming and fun environment.
