The Council of the Association has agreed the following rules for the distribution
of bursaries. Bursaries can be applied for at any time of the year and for
any meeting. If you wish to apply please study rules 3, 5 and 6 and send three
copies of your application together with an addressed envelope (if you wish
to receive a reply) to the LASA Secretariat.
RULES FOR BURSARIES
1. Funds available
The total funds made available for bursaries during any financial year shall
be up to 20 per cent of the balance attributable to LASA Meetings at the end
of the previous financial year, rounded to the nearest £100; or £2,000
whichever is the greater.
2. Size of each bursary
No bursary shall exceed £1,000 or a sum agreed from time to time by
Council.
3. Rules to be followed by applicants for bursaries
a) Bursaries are available for meetings both within and outside the country
of normal residence of the applicant. A substantial part of the meeting must
be devoted to laboratory animal science or a relevant subject.
b) Partial funding has been obtained from elsewhere or is unavailable from
the employer.
c) Only fully paid up members of LASA who have been members for over one year
at the date of the start of the meeting for which the bursary is sought, are
eligible.
d) Applications will not be considered unless they are received by the LASA
Secretariat at least 1 month in advance of the first day of the meeting. This
rule will be strictly adhered to in fairness to all applicants.
e) Applications must be made on the proscribed form obtainable from the LASA
Secretariat. Applications sent in any other format will be ignored.
f) Successful applicants must submit a report on the meeting within one month
of return. This may be printed in the Newsletter.
4. Method of allocation
a) Receipt of applications will not be acknowledged.
b) Any applications that arrive after the due date will be discarded.
c) Awards will be made on the recommendation of the President, Honorary Secretary
and Honorary Treasurer. The considerations taken into account and the means
by which a decision is arrived at will be solely at the discretion of these
officers. Their decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered
into.
d) Successful applicants will be informed immediately the decision has been
made. Unsuccessful applicants will only be informed if they have enclosed a
self-addressed envelope with their application.
5. Payment
Payment will be made on application to the Honorary Treasurer before, or
after, the meeting for which the bursary is given. A self-addressed envelope
should be enclosed and the preferred method of payment stated. Payment can
be made by sterling cheque, credit transfer to a bank account, Girobank transfer,
or by a bank draft in any currency requested.
If a successful applicant does not attend the meeting any money provided
must be returned to the Honorary Treasurer. In special circumstances this requirement
may be waived at the discretion of Council of the Association.
6. Report by bursary holder
This must be sent to the LASA Secretariat within one month of the bursary
holder's return from the meeting. It should be concise and suitable for publication
in the Association's Newsletter in the style: "Mr Smith attended the recent
FELASA meeting held in Greenland in June 1989 and writes ..........".
7. Publicity
The names of successful applicants and the sums awarded to them will be published
in the Association's Newsletter.
