1. The LASA Award will be in the form of a medal.
2. The criterion for making the award shall be a significant contribution to
laboratory animal science including the welfare of laboratory animals. Contributions
may stem from inter alia, scientific or technical advance, political decision,
promulgating animal welfare, architectural design, philosophical insight, commercial
innovation, teaching, broadcasting and all forms of publication.
3. The medal may be awarded to an individual, a group of individuals or to an
association, trust, federation, institution, commercial company, corporation,
university etc., of any nationality. There shall be no limit of time as to when
the activity meriting the award took place.
4. Candidates for the award may be nominated in writing to the Honorary Secretary
of the Association by any member at any time. The nominations shall contain a
statement setting out the reasons for nomination and include the signatures of
any supporters.
5. The award of the medal shall be considered in the first instance by a committee
of officers of the Association who may co-opt other persons to advise them. The
recommendations of this committee shall be voted on by Council under normal standing
orders.
Every name suggested by members shall be put before Council with a recommendation
and nominators shall be informed of the outcome. In the even that a nomination
is not accepted the nominee’s name shall not be resubmitted until three
years have elapsed.
6. Not more than three medals shall be awarded during any calendar year except
for the initial AWARDS. There is no requirement for an award to be made in any
given year.
7. Upon the award being accepted, the medal shall be presented at a time and
place decided by Council. If the award is made to a group of individuals, Council
may decide to present each member of the group with an example of the medal.
8. Each medal shall bear the name of the award, the name of the recipient, the
date of award and, if required, be provided with a stand or frame for display.
9. The medal shall be supported by the general funds of the Association or by
such other means as Council may from time to time decide.
10. These regulations may be altered or terminated at any time by a majority
vote in Council.
